“I’ll bring the cake out,” Anton’s mother said.

“Don’t bring the cake out,” his father shouted. “You fed us too well already. We’re too stuffed with pot roast to even think about cake.”

“I didn’t make that cake from scratch for nothing, Abel.”

“All I’m saying, Vera, is we need time. Let us digest for a minute, will you?”

Uncle Gregor injected himself suddenly into the conversation. “Why didn’t you tell Anton that he was to have Christmas with us?”

All conversation stopped. His father stared at his mother, who stared back.

“Abel told him. Didn’t you, Abel?”

“You never told me to tell him! You said you were going to tell him.”

“I said no such thing. I was doing all the packing. That’s the one thing I asked you to do. Everything else you left to me.”

Anton felt himself rise from the table. It was a move he hadn’t planned out in advance. “I’m taking that walk now,” he said.

But both his great-uncle and his grandmother had joined the argument now, and everybody was shouting to be heard over everybody else, and Anton couldn’t tell if anyone had heard him or not. He sighed, and walked into the entryway of the apartment, where he got his coat out of the hall closet.

“Where are you going, honey?” he heard his mother’s voice ask.

He turned to see that she had followed him to the door.

“Just out,” he said. But she looked devastated, so he added, “I just need a walk. I’ll be back in time for cake.”
